The Story

In 2023, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time, and I knew at 38 that I couldn’t become complacent given my strong family history (among other risk factors, which put lifetime risk three times that of a woman my age). When I went in for my first-ever mammogram, I learned that given my predisposition to cancer and the composition of my breast tissue, this modality of screening wouldn’t be sufficient for me. I was referred for an MRI and ultrasound, which led to the first of two biopsies that were taken in the space of six months. These terrifying events, paired with the results of several breast cancer risk evaluations, left me faced with three options: screenings every three months (rotating between MRIs and Ultrasounds) for the rest of my life, Tamoxifen (which, even with the c.50% risk reduction, still landed me in the high-risk category AND one of the side effects of the drug is an increased risk of uterine cancer), or, compromise a few bad days over a lifetime of worry (or even worse – cancer) and opt for a risk-reducing (prophylactic) surgery. On August 1, 2024, I was fortunate enough to undergo a double mastectomy and reconstruction, and participate in an ongoing Clinical Trial for a robotic led procedure. I had a phenomenal care team at Mayo Clinic and was met with kindness every step of the way, so I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge them and contribute a portion of the donations received to their research department to fund groundbreaking procedures such as the one that I had.

I did my homework and all the preparation textbook. I researched exercises, nutrition, and products to assist pre-and-post operation, all while concurrently appreciating how fortunate I was that I was choosing to have the surgery and have the resources available to me and bandwidth to put a program in place. Not everyone is so lucky. Oftentimes, those affected are forced to act quickly and have a lot more on their mind than what pillows to use or how they’re going to manage the day to day following this life-altering operation, and even worse, insurance doesn’t cover most of the the ancillary items to make recovery and integration back into everyday life comfortable, and that’s why we’re here: to take some of the guesswork out of recovery and provide products tested, loved, and thoughtfully designed, as well as offer other wellness-related resources and tips.
